When you arrive in Puerto Montt, you quickly realize that you’re not exactly in a tourist hotspot, but rather a working fishery and port town that has more recently become the transportation hub for travelers heading further south to Patagonia via bus, or taking cruises through the islands in search of glaciers and penguins. In spite its rough and rugged appearance, or perhaps because of it, Puerto Montt is an interesting place to walk around, especially for anyone interested in photography. The blend of aged buildings, rusty metalwork and relics of industry among the newer tourist hotels and cafes create a unique atmosphere which you don’t find in most of the tourist towns you pass through. And of course, being a main port for the local fishing industry, the seafood is incredible!
Sea View of Puerto Montt from the Hotel
In the town center, you’ll find plenty of hotels and hospedajes offering reasonably-priced rooms varying in quality from very good to moldy and dirty, and you’re just looking for an average hotel with a bed to sleep in for a night or two before moving on, then that’s just fine. If on the other hand, you’re looking for a more luxurious way to pass your time in Puerto Montt with a great view over the town and the sea, then you should head up the hill, about a 10-minute walk from the town center, to the Manquehue Hotel.
The modest exterior, designed to reflect the traditional timber-clad houses, reveals a magnificent interior. Natural materials like wood and local stone are perfectly blended and finished to create a sharp and stylish, yet warm feeling and the quality of the detail, and finishing sets it apart from many other independent luxury hotels.
The stylish reception with limestone plinths and designer lighting
Here are our top reasons to stay in Hotel Manquehue:
We were looked after really well by all of the staff at the Manquehue, from the moment we walked in, to the moment we walked out. The staff on reception were always friendly and super helpful, and they helped us our tour company to organize our ferry trip to southern Patagonia. The manager, Jorge, was extremely friendly and happily took the time to chat with us, even though his baby was born during our stay!
Extra large double bed
The Hotel Manquehue has everything you need no matter what your reason for staying. If you’re here purely to relax, then the rooms have everything you need, with super-comfortable beds and steaming hot showers. The internet throughout the hotel is super fast and always running, and the rooms are all equipped with a big desk if you need to work on the go.
Hotel Meeting Room
There is also a whole floor dedicated to meeting rooms and conference spaces, complete with computers, screens, and digital projectors.
Swimming pool and relaxation area
The swimming pool is small but large enough for relaxation and some gentle exercise, and the simple gym is equipped enough to keep you in shape.
Super-comfortable lounge area
The lounge area on the ground floor is large and comfortable with a widescreen TV, armchairs and leather sofas, perfect for reading or just having a coffee before you head out to explore. The restaurant serves all meals and drinks throughout the day and night. The ambiance is relaxing, and in the evenings they even have a live lounge singer to keep you entertained over your dessert.
Amazing breakfast buffet
In my opinion, breakfast is the most important part of any luxury hotel, even more so than the room – it’s what I look forward to most of all! I wasn’t disappointed here, a never-ending supply of fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, good coffee, a selection of cheese and cooked meats, including salami, eggs, fresh bread and sausages. There’s more than enough food here to keep you happy past lunch and then some!
Sea view from our room
Situated on the top of a hill with views over the whole city and sea and only a 10-minute walk (2-minute taxi) away from the center, the hotel is perfectly located for everything you need; shops, restaurants; even the Navimag cruise port is only 10 minutes away.
If you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Puerto Montt that ticks all the boxes regarding comfort, quality, service and the overall atmosphere and experience, then the is the absolute best option in town.
