“It will take about two hours to the the hotel,” said the hotel driver when I got into the car and started munching on the welcome fruits he provided. I took an early morning flight to Bali from Manila, and having a cold towel on my face and eating local fruits were a refreshing start to an otherwise hot day. We were on our way to Canggu, a coastal area on the south coast of the island where Tugu Hotel Bali is located. I spent the first two nights of my short 5D4N vacation here, and I wished I stayed longer.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE PROPERTY

In contrast to the party vibe in Kuta and Seminyak, Canggu offers a more relaxed atmosphere for tourists, and this is exactly what makes it the perfect location for Hotel Tugu Bali.

Unlike most luxury hotels that would have state-of-the-art facilities and modern amenities, Hotel Tugu Bali provides its guests with an authentic Balinese experience, from accommodation to dining to customer service. Instead of having buildings for hotel rooms, what they have are villas that are intricately designed to transport you to the early years while giving you the comforts of your home.

Aside from being a hotel, Hotel Tugu Bali is also home to a massive collection of Indonesian antiques and artifacts that were collected by the owner Anhar Setjadibrata. This is his way of reintroducing the country’s colorful past to the present generation, all while protecting these works of art from deterioration.

Also unique to the property is the separate beachfront area right across the hotel. Here you can relax and wait for the sunset or sit by the beach and watch surfers ride the waves. Canggu is a popular destination for professional surfers as the breaks here are much larger.

THE STAFF

The staff of Hotel Tugu Bali was among the most efficient and professional that I have met in all my years of traveling. They maintain a standard that is a five-star hotel while making sure that their guests feel right at home. From check in to check out, I got nothing but friendly smiles and kind gestures from everyone I encountered.

When I arrived in Hotel Tugu Bali, I was welcomed by the manager Jenny who told me a little something about the hotel. I was also offered a welcome drink of my choice. In the afternoon, I met up with Marija who gave me a private tour of the property. I especially liked that they do this to all of their guests, as this is a good way for everyone to see the entire property and know more information.

Marija was also kind enough to let me try one of their signature massages, the Purnama and Tilem Massage, a 90-minute massage that includes a blessing ceremony by the sea and a herb and frangipani flower bath. It was a very relaxing massage especially since I hiked Mt. Batur earlier that day.

THE ROOM

I was assigned to a Deidara suite that will be my home for two nights, and it was indeed a home! The suite was located on the ground floor, with an antique wooden main door that opens to a mini garden. A few steps away is another door that opens to the room, where a massive canopy bed and a private pool awaits. I was also taken aback by how beautiful the bathroom was, especially with how they designed it to suit the vibe of the hotel.

THE FOOD

Hotel Tugu Bali provides an all-day breakfast concept to its guests, meaning you don’t need to wake up early just to avail of your suite’s complimentary breakfast like the case in most hotels. Here, you can have your breakfast at a much later time of the day.

For my first breakfast, it became my lunch since I arrived from my trek at around 1:00 p.m. I decided to have my breakfast in the suite because I was really tired and so I can go to bed right after. This is what I ordered:

INSIDER TIPS

1. There is room service every time you leave the suite, so expect it to be clean and well arranged when you get back from a tour.

2. Aside from their all-day breakfast concept, you can also have your meal anywhere in the property.

3. Second floor suites have the ocean view while ground floor suites have a private pool.

WHAT TO DO AROUND/WITHIN THE AREA

1. Surf – Canggu is one of the best spots for surfing in Bali. If you’re not into surfing, you can just watch the pros riding the waves.

2. Watch the Sunset – Sunset by the beach is always a good idea, and you can do it in the beachfront area of Hotel Tugu Bali.

3. Go for the Mt. Batur sunrise trek – For the adventurous traveler, a two-hour climb to the summit crater of an active volcano in Bali just might complete your trip. Various tour companies offer this activity.
